Artist's bio

Jelica Jovin was born in Former Yugoslavia and finished her formal art education at the University of Belgrade.
After University Jelica became an art critic and her column appeared every Sunday in a weekly magazine for a National newspaper "Oslobodjenje".


After the civil war broke in the Former Yugoslavia Jelica along with her husband Sadko fled the besieged city of Sarajevo and came to Canada in 1993.After few years of adjusting to Canada and learning the new language Jelica became a coordinator for artists exchange between Serbia and Canada, Art Administrator to Open Studio and an Art teacher at The Avenue Rd Arts School and the Koffler Centre for the Arts.
Since then Jelica exhibited in number of different galleries including MacLaren Art Centre in Barrie, Station Gallery in Whitby,Museum of Art and History in Orillia ,Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto and Montgomery Inn Historic Museum among others.


Jelica's work deals with identity, the immigrant experience, as well as experience of being a women in diaspora. In her work she is capturing symbols and moments of our fleeting time through the medium of photography.
