The novel is a development from a parallel body of performance and video work in which Paterson inhabits the male lead of "Richard Monitor." Designed and illustrated by Bruce Mau. Cover image by Sean Leaning.
Paterson performed excerpts of its working manuscript at Art Metropole on May 2 1985, as part of Six Days Against Censorship.
When asked about the the book Paterson remarked, "I'm not sure what I can say about it. You could say its Raymond Chandler's version of The Picture of Dorian Grey (I'm being glib). A film noir with an anti-femme fatale"
