The novel is a development from a parallel body of performance and video work in which Paterson inhabits the male lead of "Richard Monitor." Designed and illustrated by Bruce Mau. Cover image by Sean Leaning.
 
Paterson performed excerpts of its working manuscript at Art Metropole on May 2 1985, as part of Six Days Against Censorship. 
 
When asked about the the book Paterson remarked, "I'm not sure what I can say about it. You could say its Raymond Chandler's version of The Picture of Dorian Grey (I'm being glib). A film noir with an anti-femme fatale"
